Programs
Two 1-Week Sessions 8 AM- 1:30 PM Monday-Friday
Free to registered rising 9th grade students
• Session #1: June 14-18
• Session #2: July 19-23
Registration deadline for any session is June 1, 2010
The purpose of the camp is two fold. One purpose is to introduce the freshman students to the campus, school layout, teachers, school rules and policies, expectations for classroom behavior as well as study skills and extra curricular school programs. The second purpose of the camp is to work with students in a small group setting on writing, reading, math and science skills. In addition to the academic skills, we also want to include some other fundamentals such as the arts, peer mediation skills, etiquette, social skills, and some great guest speakers from the local community.
Snacks will be provided courtesy of local restaurants and grocery stores as well as from contributions from individual supporters. The Friday of each session will culminate with a 45 minute lunch/award celebration, which will be held in the school cafeteria. Various guest speakers from the community will visit the camp each week for about an hour to share their expertise and to explore some hands-on activities with the students.
WHY OFFER THIS PROGRAM?
The transition from 8th grade to 9th grade could be overwhelming. Sometimes, students are scared and hesitant about attending a new, larger school. Additionally, some students need extra help in core subjects, such as math, English, and science. This summer camp is in a relaxed atmosphere, gives the students time to meet and work with some of their teachers, and provides them the opportunity to learn about the experiences and procedures for a great first day of school and a successful freshman year.
